The genus Sempervivum, which consists of some 50 species and more than 4000 cultivars, belongs to the family of Succulents (Crassulaceae), which thrive under dry conditions. Sempervivum is a winter-hard Succulent that can be found in European mountains and in Asia. The name Sempervivum is Latin and means “always alive”. The Sempervivum is closely related to the genus Jovibarba: it can be distinguished from the Sempervivum by the deviating flower patterns. The naming of the Sempervivum as such is a problem. Besides the authentic
species, a number of natural hybrids have been created spontaneously.
In addition, numerous artificial cross-breedings also exist. As a result
of the numerous artificial cross-breedings and the fact that the same
species have been described, confusion has arisen with regard to the naming
of the cultivars and some of the cultivars thus have different names.
