Origin

The Aloe genus, which consists of some 300 species, belongs to the Asphodelaceae family. Aloes can be found in Arabia, South Africa and on Madagascar. The name Aloe is probably derived from the Hebrew/Greek word “allal” which means “bitter”. In South Africa, the Aloe genus is referred to as “Aalwijn” which means bitter juice. In other words, the juice taken from the Aloes is obviously bitter.
