Frequently asked questions
Will my cactus bloom?
Most cacti bloom after about 2 years. The Mammillarias flower earlier
than the other species. You may have to wait 10 or even more years in
the case of Cereus. The general rule for blooming is to stop watering
the plants from October to March and to put them in a cool place. They
will flower in the spring. More about this subject...
My plants are growing conically.
You have put them in a place which is too dark, and when this is combined
with too much water, the cacti grow too fast and in a spiral shape. Keep
the cactus dry and if possible place it in a sunny place. Keep dry in
the winter and at a maximum temperature of 15°C.
My cactus is rotting. What am I doing wrong?
The cactus has too much water and this means there is not enough air in
the potting soil. The only solution is to reduce watering! Never give
water if the pot soil is still moist. The best way to give water is to
let the potting soil draw water from under the pot.
How much water can I give my cactus?
You can do the most harm by giving too much water, so skipping the watering
now and again is not a problem. Keep it dry during the winter months and
put it in a cool place, since this is the resting period for the cactus.
The best indication for watering is to check the potting soil. If the
soil is dry, then you can add water.
Can I put my cactus outdoors?
Yes, but not in the winter. Cacti cannot withstand freezing temperatures.
In the summer, you can leave them on the patio, and they will enjoy this.
Take care when moving them: move the plants gradually and never put them
immediately in direct sunlight.
